• In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Whilst creating my media product of a Radio program i have tried to follow and develop the forms and conventions of the radio programs that are out there already, for example nearly every radio program starts with a catchy jingle before any of the presenters talk, or sometimes, the presenters talk over the jingle, the jingle is there to welcome the listeners to the show and acknowledge that it is the begining of this new show, often the jingles are made to be catchy so that they stick in your head, and you think about the radio show so that you come and listen to it again.I have stuck to the conventions of a standard radio show that is out in the media already by having a presenter that 'hosts' the show and then other person's inolved in other sections of the radio show, such as the news broadcaster who reads out all the news and news bulletins, the outside reporters who try are there to get interviews with people who are linked to news stories etc.After my radio Jingle, the first voice of the show is the presenter, the most important part of the radio show as he is the person who makes the show glide swiftly from link to link, i have tried to keep my radio show like this with the presenter introducing the news quite quickly after the Jingle ends and he has said a bit about the show coming up, this has also followed the codes and conventions of a normal radio program because it is using the presenter as the main person in the radio show who does host the show.Throughout my Radio show I don't believe i have challenged any of the codes and conventions or forms that a normal Radio show that could be found on the radio stations right now, I have tried to create a good Radio show that conforms to the codes and conventions that are already out there.I have tried to use the codes and conventions to make my Radio program run smoothly and sound professional, the codes and conventions work in real life radio programs daily and i thought it would be the best way to try and create a radio program for my project.

• How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The research that i carried out into the social groups and what the public listen to was through a questionaire, I thought this would be a good way to collect the data because i could have many questions from the age of the person, the gender and what they like to listen to.From the research that i carried out i found out that the age group i should really be targetting my radio show at was around the 15-35 age group as that is the age group that seems to listen to the most music and the radio, there are people who are above this age group but the proportions of the numbers who listen to different radio stations such as a mainly 'Jazz' broadcasting show would be cutting down how big the audience i was targetting would be.From my research I didn't find much difference between female and male as they both seem to listen to almost exactly the same amount of music throughout the week, what i did find out was that the most popular genre of music that was played in radio shows was rock and also that a lot of people like to hear what the news is around the world and locally during the radio.From the research I did I believed it was best to create the begining of a Radio broadcast to fullfill the criteria of a Radio jingle, which then goes into a news bulletin with outside reporters and Voxpops, once again fullfilling the criteria, after the news has finished it goes back to the presenter and you hear a new track from a band that would be interviewed later in the show, I believed this was a good idea as I was representing as many of the needs of the listener that i was going to be targetting in my radio show, which was aimed at a age group of 15-35 on the local island who like a music based show but also do like hearing what is happening around the world and locally. I believed that it was the best idea to target a particular age range audience as they are the ones who seem to be listening to a lot of radio and know what they want out of a radio program

• What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The type of media institution that may distribute my media product of the begining of a radio program would be a local radio station such as BBC Radio Jersey, I think this would be the kind of media institution that would distribute it because i have produced a radio news broadcast that has local and international news, if it was to be distributed to a larger media institution it would not be suitable to have local and international news, I also believe if it were more local there would be more chance of a better prime time spot, and for the show that i made i believe this would be the best option for it, because of this i would aim my radio show at a section of a Big media institution such as the BBC but on a local scale such as BBC Radio Jersey.

• Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience that i was targetting for my media product would be between the age range of 15-35 male and female of any class between ABC1 to C2DF because whatever state their lives are in, they are able to easily listen to the radio and enjoy it, whilst creating my product i targetted this audience because from my research i found that it seemed to be the audience that listens to the most radio and wanted to make the effort filling out the questionaire about the radio program, obviously wanting to have a bit of input into it, I also believe that it is a good idea to target an age range of 15-35 because you are getting the younger and slightly older, this age range seems to be into rock and pop music and also like to hear what is happening around the world, these are the reasons i have tried to aim my media product at between 15 and 35 year olds.


• How did you attract/address your audience?
I have used a few techniques to try and attract and address the audience that i was targetting, for a start i aimed to conform as much as possible to the already established codes and conventions around the radio because that is what the audience is used to listening to, with the show starting with a jingle so that everyone knows what it is and then a main presenter to host the whole show, but this can be divided into different sections which the presenter links to, such as the news.
Another way i attempted to attract and address my audience was through creating a catchy starting jingle to the show, this would hopefully be remembered by the audience so that whenever they hear it they know what show it is and will hopefully want to listen to it again.
I addressed my audience by trying to create a media product that is what my market research had told me was liked, that a rock and pop show is liked by the majourity, and a large amount of people like to know what is going on locally and around the world with news bulletins.
I thought that the most important way to attract and address my audience was to listen to the research that i did, and from this i tried to create a show that the audience i aimed at would like to listen to, I believe i have created and done this, so would hopefully attract the audience.


• What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

From using the iMac's and Garageband i have learnt a lot that will aid me in future life, i have learnt mainly how to be more confident in using the iMac's to their full potential which i have never done before, i have also learnt a lot about how to use Garageband and all the good features that it has on it such as the voice recording and the database of sound effects, loops and tracks, what i thought was great was that because Garageband had this database of tracks that even though i have never been good at music i managed to create a good Jingle to go on my Radio program, without Garageband and learning how to use it i would not have been able to do this.

I also think that what i have learnt from the gadgets such as voice recorders which have been great for future life as if i ever need to record something i will be able to, they were also great for the interviews and vox pops'.

What i have learnt about the iMacs and garageband will be able to aid me as i go into the A2 course, which i believe is great from learning about the technologies side, without doing this project i wouldn't know what i do know now.

• Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression fromit to the full product?

After creating the preliminary task i believed i had done a good job of it, but now looking back after completeing my full project i think that i have learnt a great deal more about garageband, and also other techniques of recording sound such as small sound recorders outside and then adding it into your garageband through some of the tools it has built in. Compared to the preliminary task i believe what it mainly comes down to is detail of work, how it has been put together and how well it has been done, and in all of these I believe i have greatly improved how i have worked and what ive created, If i hadn't have done the preliminary task i would not have been able to make a final piece like I have done.
In summary, I believe that i have learnt how to use the iMac's and Garageband to a better full potential compared to my preliminary task, and the final product i have created is much much better.

After i finished my product i had 5 people in my class have a listen to it:

Some of the comments i got in reply were:

'Compared to your preliminary task it is much better'
'I think the final production of your task is of great quality'
'I think you have managed to hit the audience you were targetting well with what you have created'.

I also got some constructive feedback which was good, and i also think its right.

'Some of the links throughout the show arn't fully in time or equalized, each of these should be looked at individually.'

On the whole the students I asked in our class thought it was a good product and i had targetted the audience well, with some constructive feedback I believe if i had time to edit it i could change certain things.

Above is a pie chart showing the results of a question I asked 20 peers in my class 'Have i fullfilled the criteria that I set out of who i was targetting'

Out of the twenty, 18 believed i had and 2 said I hadn't.

The reason for the two peers saying I hadn't was that my radio show didn't go on long enough with the introduction of the band.

To solve this, if i did it again i would add another minute or so to my radio show so that it included after the news going into the band.

I also posed the question asking if they would listen to the show i created,the same 20 sample were used and 19 of the peers said that they would listen and 1 saying they wouldnt, for the reason that he doesn't like hearing the news, because of this result, i believe that i have targetted my audience well.

I decided to get a few of the views of the peers in my class to see how my final product, the radio production, compared to what i set out to create and if i had hit the target audiences that i was aiming for.

From the feedback I believe i have done what was asked of me, and of more significance, i have completed what i wanted to create to the specifications that i set out, If i edited what i created further i would try and use the feedback i have recieved to try and get the views of those who thought I did not complete it, changed.

Production of main Task







The way in which I created the jingle and radio project was using Garageband on the iMacs, I decided to use Garageband to create the jingle because it has a database of good tracks and sound effects that would be useful in creating the jingle.









Above is the bar at the bottom when you are on a iMac of recently used or open programs, below is the image that you need to click to load the garageband, click on the image of the guitar and it will load up Garageband:


Above is the Garageband icon that i had to use to load up Garageband.



Once i had loaded up Garageband on the iMac i then had to create a new Project using the 'Create new project.

Once you have loaded up this you will get a blank Garageband document, the way in which i started to create my jingle was using the database of already input sound effects loops and effects that can be seen below:

From this section i picked out tracks and sound effects to create a good jingle, i attempted to create my own jingle but i found it was extremely hard to time it so thought the best way to create a good jingle would be using these.

As you can see the blue bars above, i have added in sections of differnet loops and tracks that can be found to create a nice jingle that can be heard at the start of my Radio show, underneath the blue boxes there are blue highleted sections with a blue line above and darker blue dots on this line, this line of volume i have individually gone and edited the volume of each section as it goes along to try and equalize the sound throughout to a steady level, i believe i have done this well.

The next step i had to take after creating the jingle was to record voices, to start with the presenters voices i recorded straight onto the iMac's after opening up a new track in the Garageband Project and changing the settings to vocal, as can be seen below:

When i got onto the Track info bar which can be seen above i had to choose what vocals i wanted, there are many different types which can be seen in the box on the top right from no effects to megaphone, i left it as no effect as i thought it wouldnt sound right if i started editing the settings.

Once i have recorded the vocals they came up in garageband like the image above, with the dialogue being the orange bar.

The next stage i had to take was to go out and get an interview with a reporter and some Voxpops for my Audio project, the way i got around this was using a Digital Voice Recorder that is below which meant i could move around and go outside and get good quality recordings that could be put onto the iMacs.

After spending a few hours outside doing some outside reporting and VoxPops i needed to get the recordings off the recorder and onto the iMac, First i plugged it into the iMac and saved the recordings onto the desktop, i then had to import them into Itunes to be able to bring them over to Garageband, as can be seen below.

As you can see once i have got onto the screen that can be seen above I have chosen to import them in from Itunes, which can be seen below, these were then dragged onto the Garageband project into the place that they were wanted and it was easily done.

After i had all the recordings done and the Jingle complete i had to make sure it was all equalized out and sounded alright which i did using the lines of volume under the bars of clips (which can be seen earlier in this blog)

After i had created my final project and was happy that it was correct i had to export it, to do this i went to the toolbar at the top of Garageband with 'Share' and choose the option to 'export song to disk' and save it on my desktop, this caused a mixdown to occure as can be seen below, which went through the whole track making sure it was ok.

Once the mixdown has complete and it has been saved onto the desktop finished when it is opened it will open in Quicktime which can be seen below, with my title being 'Craig Main finish'

· Two boats carrying more than 500 migrants have capsized off the coast of Libya, 200 of the migrants are feared dead although a rescue effort is ongoing.

· A YOUTH choir from the Island has struck gold in Prague while taking part in one of Europe’s major international competitions for young ensembles. The Musical Originals Singers, trained and conducted by Imogen Nicholls, won the Children’s Choir Class – beating the favourites from Russia – and also received one of only four gold awards to be given in the competition.

Planning of idea's

For my Main project i need to have some certain parts to the radio show, these include:

1. Jingle

2. Presenter

3. Outside broadcast/Reporter.

4. A couple of Vox Pops.

5. Appropriate Sound FX

How i hopefully am aiming to create my radio project is:

- A jingle that introduces the show, which will be 15 to 30 seconds long so that the audience get an idea of what could be in the show and primarily introducing the show.

- The jingle ends and a backing track continues so that the show isn't fully quiet.

- The radio show host comes in over the backing track and introduces the news and sport.

- News and sport jingle starts which is a very short jingle.

- After the news and sport jingle the news broadcaster comes in with the headlines of the news, this is a brief explanation of what has happened in Jersey over the past few days.

- The full news will next come in to expand on these headlines with the full story on what is happening.

- It will cut to a reporter who is at one of the news sites to have an interview with someone associated with the news, then some Vox pops.

- Cuts back to the news with the ending of the news program.

- After the news has finished it will go back to the presenter who will end the show.

Below is the timeline i will hopefully be aiming for when creating my Radio project

Software

For my Radio project task i have decided to use Garageband on the Macs due to the features that it has including a database of un-copywrited tracks and sound effects that i will be able to use throughout my Radio project, I also believe that it will be good because i can easily export it to other formats which can be uploaded onto the blog once complete.

Below is my Preliminary task.

• In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The radio jingle i have created conforms to the forms and convenions of a real media product because i have enhanced what is already out on the market, i have made sure that throughout my jingle and begining of my show i have got an equalized level and that i have a begining jingle that drags the audience into listening and 'introduce' my show, after that i then have the radio dj/host talking about the show and introducing a guest, ending after a very short talk with an archive clip of a piece of work that he has done.

• How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I believe that my jingle represents a younger audience, although it could easily vary with many older listeners who like to hear new songs and tracks that are just out and what they are like, also chatting to guest's from the bands and other sections of the media.


• What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The kind of media institution that might distribute my media product is a radio broadcaster such as BBC radio 1, it is a very fast moving, hip station with many different shows which vary from drum and bass to rock, because of this i think it is best to say that my media product would best fit in on a radio station such as BBC Radio 1 and it would fit in well with the other radio shows they already have.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience of my media product would be hopefully a younger teenage audience who are up to date with new music and just want to find out more about it and what is new throughout the world of music, this does not rule out any older people and im sure there would also be an older audience who listen ranging from 25-40.

• How did you attract/address your audience?

The way i have attempted to attract and adress the audience i have aimed at is to follow the specification but still keep a catchy jingle and a very quick fast moving loud archive sound clip as i believe they would be more likely to listen if they like music after hearing this, one aim was not to have too much talking so that it wouldnt loose listeners from too much talking.


• What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Through the creation of my radio jingle i have had to learn and get to terms with using Garageband on the iMac, although it is not a particularly hard piece of software there is many different attributes to it and procedures you can change throughout the use, this means at times it can be hard, although, even with this i have managed to create an alright jingle and fullfill the specification, even attempting to equalize all of the levels throughout my jingle, to summarize, through creating the jingle i have come to terms, and learnt to use Garageband.
